Cultural Humility and Working With Transgender and Gender Expansive Clients
Course Description
Transgender and gender-expansive individuals face daily stressors including minority stress, structural oppression, lack of resources, and barriers to obtaining services. These communities face dramatically higher rates of distress and suicidality, and often are hesitant to seek treatment due to fears of mistreatment (or actual experiences of neglect or abuse). Some people who are most in need of support and therapy are the least likely, or least able, to access the very services they seek. And some clinicians can inadvertently do harm through microaggressions or simply not knowing how to talk with their gender-expansive clients.
This popular course is designed to introduce concepts of Cultural Humility and how to use this as a framework for exploring issues of gender, gender-expansive and trans clients, and psychotherapy. We will discuss vocabulary including problematic language, contextual background, and treatment concerns for trans and gender-expansive clients, and specific best-practices for ensuring all clients feel comfortable and safe in your office or clinic. Ample time will be available for questions during the session.

Course Objectives
After this presentation, participants should be able to:

- Identify best practices for GE/non-binary as well as cisgender patients
About the Presenter
Barton (Bart) Shulman is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor, National Board-Certified Counselor, Board-Certified TeleMental Health Provider, and Gender Specialist, working full-time as an individual and group psychotherapist at the UCSF Alliance Health Project, a community mental health agency where he is a member of the gender team providing interdisciplinary services to the trans and gender-expansive community. Bart maintains a private practice in San Francisco, and is licensed in California, Colorado, Indiana, Kansas, and Wisconsin.
