ABOUT ABOUT

Please join us to learn from three psychiatrists as they discuss the assessment and medication considerations for some common conditions that present in our clients. Specifically we will focus on how a psychiatrist might approach assessing and treating anxiety, depression and ADHD, in collaboration with therapists. Psychiatrists will also be answering your questions about medication side effects, safety, and duration of treatment.

Our presenters all work at Pacific Coast Psychiatric Associates in Walnut Creek. Anxiety Disorders will be covered by Dr. Ardis Mardin, while Dr. Petra Steinbuchel will be covering Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Dr. Pam Giacalone will be covering Mood Disorders.

Objectives:

-  Be able to identify the differences in presentation of anxiety disorders across the lifespan
-  Be able to explain the time to refer for medication management of various anxiety disorders
-  Explain the basic algorithm for treating depressive disorders with medication
-  Describe the latest data about newer interventions treating depression (Ketamine, TMS) and future directions of research in this area that patients may ask about
-  List 3 common conditions that often present in conjunction with ADHD, and how these co-occurring conditions may impact the assessment and treatment approach

Ardis Martin, MD: Board Certified Child, Adolescent, and Adult Psychiatrist. She enjoys taking a holistic and integrative approach to treatment, incorporating different treatment techniques and modalities and working collaboratively with patients and families to develop the most positive outcomes. She has clinical experience specializing in pediatric and adult psychopharmacology and psychotherapeutic techniques (CBT, Play Therapy, and Individual Psychodynamic Therapy). She also has a special interest in cultural issues, media, and music and their impact, interplay, and uses in treatment of psychiatric illness.

Petra Steinbuchel, MD: She is board certified in both general psychiatry, and child and adolescent psychiatry, and has experience working with individuals with a range of diagnoses, including anxiety and mood disorders, attention and learning problems, and post-traumatic stress. More specialized interests include gender dysphoria, the interplay between trauma and executive function, anxiety disorders in children and adolescents, and coping with medical trauma. Here approach to care is whole-person, and, when indicated, whole-family, in the context of development over the lifespan.

Pam Giacalone, MD: Board-certified adult psychiatrist. While she is comfortable with managing medications when clinically necessary, her primary treatment modality is psychodynamic therapy. She is especially interested in working with patients with depression, anxiety disorders, OCD, PTSD, and/or alcohol use disorder, and she is skilled in helping patients work through major life changes such as illness, particularly cancer, and navigate relationship issues.
